mom, how do you make a sled with arms and legs...

Molly's third grade class was give a writing prompt...

You wake up one morning and realize that your sled is magic. What happens next?

Molly wrote a great story about a red sled that grew arms and legs when she sat on it and ran her all around the town. This weekend her assignment was to build the sled in her story.

Molly came home from school asking "Mom, how do you make a sled with arms and legs?" We did a little internet research on what sleds look like and how to make one (we found a great tutorial here. Molly did all the work and I helped with the hot gluing. Next we needed arms and legs, after a lot of discussion (clay, yarn, popsicle sticks), Molly thought of her brother's Mr. Potato Head and came up with arms and feet (sorry Matt - we will replace them, I promise!) More hot glue and ta da! A sled with arms and legs.

Molly was so proud, but was convinced it wasn't quite finished...

(Note: while working on this project Molly and I were enjoying some hot cocoa and the can of whipped cream was on the table) Molly picked up the lid to the whipped cream and said "this could be my body and remember the people we made for Halloween? Do we have any wood balls left over?" (by the way, I love the fact that my daughter thinks crafty!!!!!) So into the craft closet we ventured and found the perfect head for our person. Molly ran up to her room and came back with some bits of felt and loops from her weaving loom. From that she made a hat, scarf, mittens, arms and legs. Again, I helped to hot glue.

Molly was beaming! She loved her creation...

Molly is now aware that the next time she's asked to imbue magical powers to an inanimate object in a writing prompt - it should be invisibility. The diorama would be a crafty project... just in another sense of the word.

With love to my crafty ladies,
Dad
